The Greene County basketball teams dropped both contests last week.
The Greene County girls basketball team was no match for the potent offensive attack of Class 3A #10 Panorama Monday, Jan. 11. The Panthers topped the Rams 66-26.
In conference action Tuesday, Jan. 12, Nevada ran over the Rams 50-23. Games across the state were postponed Friday due to the snow and blowing conditions.
Roland-Story tops the Heart of Iowa Conference with an unblemished record of 5-0. Nevada is second at 5-1, followed by West Marshall 3-2, Greene County and South Hamilton 2-3, tied for fourth place. Saydel and PCM are winless.
Panorama 66 ~ Rams 26
Panorama’s press was too much for the Greene County girls to navigate as they fell 66-26 in Jefferson. The Panthers posted 31 steals and the Rams had 39 turnovers in the lopsided contest.
The Rams were up 10-6 at the start before the Panthers went on a 25-0 run to take firm control. The Rams were behind 18-10 after the first period. Panorama had a huge second quarter, firing 29 points to Greene County’s seven for a halftime score of 47-17. A huge task for any team, the Rams added just nine points in the second half while the Panthers had 19 and ended with a 40-point victory.
Brianna Osterson had eight for the Rams and Brianna Habben had seven. Habben topped the team in rebounds with seven and Osterson added six. Panther Payton Beckman was high scorer on the night, firing 26 points.
The Rams made only nine of 31 field goals while Panorama made 24 of 70 attempts. The Panthers worked the boards to post 38 rebounds. The Rams pulled down 24 caroms.
Nevada 50 ~ Rams 23
Greene County struggled offensively again on Tuesday, falling 50-23 to HOIC opponent, Nevada. The Rams ended the first half with a mere five points. The Cubs started slow with eight points in the first period, but added 18 in the second for a 26-5 advantage at halftime. The second half was better for Greene County as they added 18 points to their tally, but Nevada stroked 24 for the 50-23 final.
Habben led the Rams with 11 points, followed by Sadie Wilson with eight. Habben also topped the team with six rebounds and Wilson had five. Nevada had balanced scoring from a number of players with Sydney Mosinski leading the way with 10 points.
Greene County made eight of 29 field goals for 28 percent while the Cubs hit 19 of 53 for 36 percent. Nevada brought down 24 rebounds and GC nabbed 22. Again, turnovers were a huge problem for the Rams as they were called for 35. Nevada listed 16.
A rescheduled game at Perry will be played Thursday, Jan. 21, beginning at 6 pm. Monday the girls face Kuemper Catholic in Carroll for a junior varsity/varsity matchup. The JV starts at 6 pm. Tuesday, January 26, the Rams travel to Prairie City-Monroe with the girls game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Ram boys
The Greene County boys basketball team lost to non-conference Panorama 66-56 on Monday and fell to HOIAC opponent Nevada 60-52 on Tuesday.
The Rams are 1-3 in conference play for fifth place and are 1-8 overall. Roland-Story tops the conference at 5-0, followed by Nevada 4-1, South Hamilton 3-2 and PCM 2-3.
Panorama 66 ~ Rams 56
Greene County was within striking distance of the Panthers until the final period when Panorama scored 17 points to the Rams’ 11 to put the game away.
The Rams were down by just one point, 15-16, at the end of the first period. Panorama lengthened their lead by three at the break, 35-32, and after three quarters, the lead was four, 49-45. The Rams’ fourth period deficit led to the Panthers’ 10-point victory, 66-56.
Bryce Stalder was the leading scorer with 24 points, followed by Richard Daugherty with 11. Caden Telleen pitched in six points. Daugherty topped the rebounding chart with seven boards. Max Riley dished five assists and Stalder had four steals. Drew Taylor posted 21 for the Panthers while Evan Taylor had 14, and Brice Taylor, 12.
Greene County made 22/61 field goals, including 6/25 behind the arc, for 36 percent along with 6/8 free throws. The Panthers hit 25/57, including 4/15 three-pointers, for 44 percent. They made 12/23 free throws. The Rams were outrebounded 44-27.
Nevada 60 ~ Rams 52
Greene County started well against Nevada, taking a 15-8 first period advantage. But the Cubs found the range in the second quarter, mounting a 21-2 run. The Rams scored the last five points of the first half and the first six points of the second half to close within 29-28, but the Cubs responded with a 15-0 run to go up 44-28. At the end of the third, Greene County was down by 13 points, 44-31. The Rams had a good fourth frame with a 21-16 shooting advantage, but it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit. Nevada posted the victory 60-52.
Daugherty led all scorers with 23 points which included seven baskets beyond the arc. Riley added 14 and Stalder had 13. Junior Colin Memmer topped the Cubs with 18 points. Daugherty also led the Rams with seven rebounds while Zach Goff passed for four assists. Riley had three steals.
Greene County made 17/42 field goals, including 11 treys, for 40.5 percent and 7/11 free throws. Nevada grabbed 27 rebounds while the Rams posted 21 caroms. The Rams committed 17 turnovers.
